90 days in Albania: the value play

The most relaxed clock in Europe's neighborhood, the cheapest season-long stays on this list, and a riviera that out-of-season is the Mediterranean at half price. Albania is the shuffle's best-kept non-secret.

The paperwork advantage

Albania's headline act: US passport holders can stay visa-free for up to one year - the most generous terms of any shuffle base. UK, Canadian, Australian, and EU passports get 90 days in 180, still perfectly matched to a shuffle rotation. Either way, Albanian days don't touch your Schengen count; your window regenerates while you're here. One caution for old-guide readers: Albania has been an EU candidate for years - terms can evolve, so confirm before a long commitment.

Tirana for city season

Tirana's rhythm suits residents more than tourists: the evening xhiro stroll, serious coffee culture (Albania has one of the highest café-per-capita counts anywhere), and mountains twenty minutes away by the Dajti cable car. Monthly apartment rates here are the lowest of the four classic bases - a recent whole-trip benchmark: 89 nights from $1,780 all-in, both flights included.

Or the riviera

South of Vlorë the coast turns into white-pebble coves backed by mountains - Himarë, Dhërmi, Sarandë, Ksamil. In July–August it's packed and priced accordingly; in May–June or September–October it's the Mediterranean with room to breathe, and monthly stays get genuinely cheap. A popular pattern: split the 90 - six weeks Tirana, six weeks Himarë - and let the bus system (cheap, frequent, occasionally chaotic) do the moving.

Getting in and out

Tirana's airport (TIA) has grown its low-cost connections fast - most Schengen hubs are a short, cheap hop. Corfu's airport is also 30 minutes by ferry from Sarandë, which opens Greek island fares for the riviera end of a stay. Overland, Albania borders Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, and Greece - the Balkans are your weekend-trip menu, and only the Greek border burns Schengen days.

The honest caveats

Infrastructure is improving, not finished: power blips happen, sidewalks freelance, and bureaucracy runs on personal charm. Cash still matters outside Tirana. Winter on the riviera is dead quiet - lovely or lonely depending on your temperament. None of it dents the core proposition: nowhere else combines this visa generosity with these prices this close to Schengen.

Keep the count straight

Albania's generosity makes it easy to be sloppy - you don't need to leave for a year, but your Schengen re-entry date still needs counting. The tracker tells you exactly when your days come back, and a budget alert can watch for the cheapest Tirana bundle while you're still in Europe. Compare the other bases in where to spend your 90 days out.

Count your days. Catch your exit.

The free tracker counts your 90/180 the border-guard way. Set a budget and we'll email when a flight out, a season-long stay, and the flight home fit under it.
