90 days in Marrakesh: the warm winter
When your days out land in November through March, the question answers itself: go where the light is. Marrakesh does winter at 20°C, monthly riad rates, and a three-hour flight from most of Schengen.
The paperwork
Morocco gives US, UK, EU, Canadian, and most Western passports 90 days visa-free - a clean one-to-one swap for your Schengen window. Extensions exist through the police bureaucracy, but the shuffle logic doesn't need them: 90 out, 90 back. As everywhere on this list, Moroccan days don't count toward Schengen; your European clock refills the whole stay.
The winter argument
This is the seasonal specialist of the four classic bases. December in Marrakesh means sunny days around 18–22°C, cold clear nights, and the Atlas mountains snow-capped on the horizon. The same months in Istanbul are grey rain and in Tbilisi real snow. If your rotation puts your 90 days out in winter, Marrakesh is the quality-of-life pick - and its prices are shoulder-season friendly precisely when you need them. Recent benchmark: 83 nights from $2,040 all-in, both flights included. Avoid the flip side: June–August is 38–45°C and genuinely punishing.
Medina riad or Guéliz apartment
- The medina - living in a riad (courtyard house) inside the old walls is the postcard version: atmospheric, gorgeous, and monthly rates on the quieter derbs get surprisingly reasonable. The trade: motorbikes in alleys, navigation by memory, and everything is a negotiation.
- Guéliz / Hivernage - the French-built new town: elevator apartments, supermarkets, wine shops, café terraces. Most season-long stayers end up here and walk into the medina when they want the show.
The life
Jemaa el-Fnaa's nightly circus, the souks' textile-and-leather maze (our site's palette is basically a Marrakesh souk photograph), Majorelle Garden on repeat, and hammams as a weekly ritual. Day-trip menu: Ourika valley, Imlil and Mount Toubkal's foothills in the Atlas, and Essaouira's windswept Atlantic coast three hours away - the classic mid-stay reset. Cafés are plentiful; check your accommodation's connection speed for anything serious, and a local eSIM covers the gaps cheaply.
The honest caveats
Tourist-facing hassle in the medina is real, if theatrical - it fades once vendors recognize you. Alcohol is available but not ambient. Fridays run quiet. And French or a few Darija phrases move every interaction from transaction to conversation.
Time the bundle
Marrakesh (RAK) has dense low-cost links to France, Spain, and beyond, so both flight legs stay cheap - but winter is also when everyone else wants the sunshine, so the good season-long stays go early. Set a budget alert in early fall for a winter rotation and let it catch the price. Compare bases in where to spend your 90 days out.
